• Love Island USA season 8 has reportedly banned contestants from having family members manage their social media accounts during filming.
  • Sean Reifel’s sister revealed the new social media restrictions while debunking rumors about her brother, including false claims circulating online that he was married and is a Trump supporter.
  • The policy change came as producers attempt to control controversies, particularly after contestant Vasana Montgomery was removed over resurfaced videos containing racial slurs.

When contestants sign up to be singles in the iconic Love Island USA Villa in Fiji, they pretty much agree to going off the grid in the name of love…or social media clout when they’re eventually booted off. Because they’re on a reality show that requires a lot of undivided attention, the Islanders have no access to their personal phones. That’s where their loved ones back home come in. Throughout the show’s history, we’ve seen contestants tap trusted confidants to essentially become their social media managers and post on their behalf to grow their follower counts.

However, as season 8 finally premieres on Peacock, one of the Islanders’ sisters revealed that the show has prohibited contestants from having others manage their social accounts throughout the summer.

Sean Reifel’s sister, Brice Marie, shared a TikTok video on May 30, where she spoke about her brother’s casting on the series.

“They are not allowed to post on socials while they are filming! We are not allowed to post for them either,” Brice said in response to a fan who asked if she was tasked with the job.

Upon her revelation, Brice is already debunking rumors that Sean is married and voted for President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

“He absolutely does not have a wife and has never been married lol,” Brice wrote in a TikTok comment, later clarifying, “We are not Tr*mp supporters!”

The changes come after some season 7 contestants tapped some of their loved ones to keep their social accounts active throughout the summer while they were in the Villa. At the time, Cierra Ortega’s best friend, MJ Hedderman, kept her Instagram alive and well with voicey updates and takes about her journey on the fan-favorite reality series.

Last summer, MJ exclusively told Cosmopolitan that when she was approached by Cierra to run her socials, “It was super casual. She had brought it up a few months before, and then a couple of days before she left, she got an email from the producers asking who was going to run her account when she was gone.”

Based on MJ’s intel, it seemed to be the norm for past seasons, but lines have gotten blurry as contestants’ social managers have stepped in amid backlash from their personal scandals.

Just last week, insiders told The Sun that the network is attempting to limit controversies altogether with “big permanent changes” to the show, saying, “They know they cannot control the fans’ reactions online so the only thing they can do is control how that reaction gets to the cast and try to limit that as much as possible.”

With one of this season’s contestants, Vasana Montgomery, already booted from the Villa because of resurfaced videos where she’s seen using racial slurs, it seems like producers aren’t taking their chances this time around.
